 Fire Chief Gregory A. Paxton is responsible for ensuring that the Division's resources are utilized efficiently and effectively, thus providing the best possible fire safety and related services to the citizens of Columbus.

As the Division Head, he provides leadership and direction for five Division Bureaus. Chief Paxton, with the assistance of his Administration Officer; is ultimately responsible for all Division operations.  Together they assure that personnel and equipment are available to accomplish the Division's mission.

Many key personnel are assigned to the Office of the Chief. Offices that report directly to the Fire Chief include; The Business Office, Research and Development, as well as the Public Information Officer, Health and Safety Officer, and Information Technology Coordinator. Rounding out the Office of the Chief is his Liaison Officer, and Special Events Unit. These Offices all provide essential support to the Chief.

The Administrative Secretary

Under the direction of the Fire Chief, provides secretarial support to the Fire Chief by answering phones, scheduling meetings and preparing various documents for communications, meetings, presentations, and other uses.  Also assists with special projects pertaining to the mission of the department and other similar activities.

A Firefighter assists the Chief with special training and accreditation to support and assist in the Fire Department accreditation process.

The Business Office

The Business Office headed by Scott M. Marburger, Fiscal Manager:

  • Develops and monitors the General Fund and Capital Improvements Budgets.
  • Coordinates purchase requests from Bureaus within the Division and monitors service contracts.
  • Maintains accounts receivable and accounts payable.
  • Prepares and monitors legislation for the Division of Fire.

The Health and Safety Officer

The Health and Safety Office is commanded by Battalion Chief Kevin Reardon. Chief Reardon's duties as Safety Officer are to develop and implement the Division's Health and Safety program as defined by NFPA 1500. He chairs the Fleet Accident Review Committee and assists the Division's three Safety Captains with enforcement of Division safety policies and procedures through training and observation.

Public Information Officer

Battalion Chief Patrick Ferguson is the Division's Public Information Officer. The responsibilities of the Public Information Office include; organizing the release of information to the news media, coordinating communications from the Fire Chief to Division personnel and various city officials, managing the Media Sector at large scale incidents, and organizing/coordinating the Division's ceremonial events. The Public Information Office also publishes the Division's bimonthly internal newsletter.

Research and Development

Research and Development (R&D) is headed by Captain Steve Martin, who works directly with the Fire Chief. R&D is responsible for researching and developing the specifications used to purchase of all the Division's needs from uniforms to aerial ladders. The Fire Division Photographer also reports to the R&D Captain. In addition, R&D publishes the Annual Report, and coordinates all of the printing and publishing needs of the Division, including the Division's forms.
